introduction to rule110 (genaro martinez)
               abstract: A short introduction to the cellular automaton (CA) rule 110.
this includes a summary of historical milestones in CA theory. The introduction also reviews the conjencture of Stephen Wolfram and the results of Mathew Cook related to the capability of universal computation in rule 110. Finally the relation between models of John von Neumann, Conway and Cook and important topics like the universal constructor and self reproduction are discussed.

tiling with rule110 (abdiel caceres)
               abstract: The patterns produced by rule 110 can be devided into triangles of various sizes. This presentation indicates how the rule 110 triangles relate to the kissing problem that goes back to a conversation between Newton and Gregory in 1694. It is studied how rule110 triangles can be combined to form patches using legal graphical concatenations. First a metric is defined on patches, then follows the definition of tiles. Various properties of those tiles are further investigated.

random boolean networks (carlos gershenson)
               abstract: This presentation provides an overview of different models of random boolean networks (RBN). Since RBNs were first introduced by Kaufman, various modifications of the basic model have been suggested. first the synchronous deterministic updating scheme was replaced by an asynchronous scheme that was inherently probablistic. Later the author of this presentation suggested to reintroduce determinism while keeping asynchronous updating. Finally the models are related to each other and their dynamics are compared.

modelling infectious diseases (joana simoes)
               abstract: The field of epidemic modelling is introduced, and the classic top-down approach is contrasted with an Alife inspired bottom-up approach. After introducing some Alife epidemic models, the author presents her own model that is based on a probablistic CA. The updating is basically devided into a contagious and a mixing phase, where the mixing is controlled by transport rules, to ensure that inter/intra regional trips as well as neigborhood visits can be modelled at an accurate level.

sperm mediated gene transfer (andrei kouznetsov)
               abstract: Sperm cells of species ranging from echinoids to man can under certain conditions take up foreign DNA and internalize it into their genome. This evidence was observed under laboratory conditions. The question 'Can sperm cells take up the foreign DNA in nature?' is open. Some mobile DNA-elements transpose from genome to genome. Sperm cells can be seen as an ideal vehicle for selfish DNA. The dual role of sperm cells for transport of their own haploid genome and the selfish DNA is conceded and a set of rules for bottom-up modeling is proposed.

darwin bots (carlo comis)
               abstract: DarwinBots is an alife simulation with a vivid community of users creating and breeding new bots every day. The basic units are cells swimming around in a huge two dimensional aquarium. They are equipped with sensors, muscles, and a simple metabolism. The way in which they move, eat, grow and reproduce is determined by their genetic program which is layed down in their DNA in a simple postfix machine code. In contrast to standard genetic programming approaches, darwinbots is all about coevolution, It allows the user to observe the emergence of interesting phenomena including multicellular organisms.

modelling tastes (alan roach)
               abstract: Traditionally sociology of culture is concerned with meaning in texts, music, lyrics etc. The author of this presentation tries to unveil the processes behind the devolopment of such meanings and to link them back to cognitive mechanisms by looking at taste judgements from an evolutionary perspective. He introduces interesting hypotheses about the functions of grooming, gossip and taste development for the maintenance of groups or sub-cultures. Among those functions are the prevention of freeriders, mating advertisment and the evolution of social hierarchies.
